Springtime means proliferation for practically all wildlife in nature, Termites included. While they are a threat year round in the St. Johns area, springtime is when Termite start make themselves known. You will often find swarmer’s on the exterior of your home around a window frame or in a cobweb and have it not necessarily be a problem. Finding them on the interior however, can mean they have found a way into your home and are busy around the clock eating the wood that makes up your home.

The two typed of termites you are going to deal with the vast majority of the time are Subterranean and Dry Wood Termites.  Subterranean Termites can do serious damage to your home in a short amount if left unchecked. They can enter unnoticed and eat for years before and interior swarm arrives to give notice. Fortunately you can protect your home from Subterranean Termites with liquid termiticide application around your home or building. These treatments done properly can be highly effective in protecting your home. Depending on the product that is being used, the Termite have no idea that they are even encountering a product as they contact it and spread it through out the colony. Depending on your landscaping or building choices, liquid treatments and be difficult, or sometimes even impossible to do with out major labor, which can be pricey. Fortunately, St. Johns Pest Control also can apply an In-ground Baiting System around your perimeter to stop Subterranean Termites with out a need for excessive drilling around your home or structure.

Drywood Termites can be trickier. They have much smaller colonies than Subterranean Termites, and they don’t eat as much as fast. These ones will sometimes come into your home with a piece of furniture, or even with wood used for reservations. Drywood Termites will slowly develop in a piece of wood over the years before they either swarm, or start kicking frass out of and exit hole. If located early enough, you can remove the offending wood from the home or structure. If they are in structural wood (window or door frame ect.) and you catch them early enough, they can be killed with a localized foaming termiticide application avoiding the huge cost and inconvenience of having to fumigate the entire home.

The Jacksonville / St Johns area have had a significant amount of growth over the past 10 years. The fact of the matter is the almost all of the  structure on newer homes are made entirely of wood. If you are in an established neighborhood in Ponte Vedra or South-side, or new land clearings in Nocatee or Silverleaf, your home needs some kind of protection from Subterranean Termites.
